Efek Rumah Kaca is one of the best bands around today, and we felt so lucky when they decided to work with us for their latest album cover. We were contacted last year, actually, but for some reason the album could only be finished this year. We did the artworks inside the album cover. They also worked with an amazing local street artist, very good friend of ours named Popo, who did the sticker series as bonus inside the cover. The designer of the cover is one of the members of Efek Rumah Kaca, Poppy (bass), who is also a graphic designer. Here are some of the images we made... (Not all made it to the cover): This is the CD...
ICAD (Indonesian Contemporary Art & Design) is an annual exhibition held at Grand Kemang Hotel in Kemang, Jakarta. This year we were invited to participate. The theme of the festival is "Vertical Horizen" (exactly...), so we decided to do an imaginary Hotline Service where we can be directly linked from the ground floor lobby to a room at the top floor via a telephone line. We displayed the piece amongst the house phones in the hotel lobby, and our telephone was literally available to use to contact a room at the top floor of the hotel. Here is an article in The Jakarta Post about the exhibition, where we were featured, in front of our Hotline Service. album: orkeslah kalau begitarIt was an honour and a privilege for us to be asked by the legendary local Pop Dangdut ensemble, OM PMR, to do their latest mini album cover. These guys are amazing! The photo shoot was taken at the old market building, Pasar Blok A, which is now gone already. So we were lucky. We then asked one of our favourite emerging young artist, Gooodit, to work on the graphics. He did a fabulous job. We also worked with another young artist, Angga 'Acip' Cipta, who did the drawing of the band for the inside of the cover. Acip and Gooodit belong to a group of young and brutal street artists' initiative called "Cut and Rescue". We love them. We also did a few more photos for the inside of the album cover and a poster bonus.
"ONCE UPON A TIME, INDONESIA 1966" is a project by The Secret Agents for OK. Video Media Arts Festival 2015. The theme of this biannual festival this year is "Orde Baru" (New Order); which, in Indonesia, started in 1966 and ended in 1998. The Secret Agents displayed what look like pages of a book entitled ONCE UPON A TIME, INDONESIA 1966. It's a book filled with all the things that happened in 1966 around Indonesia. We were inspired by how vague the history of our country is, and how most of the history we learned in school back in the Orde Baru era are fabrications, done by the government at the time. What is fact and what is fiction?
"I Want To Live Like Common People" is the latest ongoing work by The Secret Agents. The piece is an instagram account named the_commonpeople, where we will continuously add pictures of ourselves, posing in many places, just like what everybody else is doing.
The work can be seen at Edwin's Gallery (in Kemang, Jakarta), as part of an exhibition "Medium of Living". It is an art exhibition to celebrate 300 years of Martell that is participated by many artists from all kinds of styles. The exhibition runs from 11 - 22 March 2015. Follow the progress of our work for this project, by following the instagram the_commonpeople. About "I Want To Live Like Common People" “Medium of Living” An exhibition for Martell Indonesia curated by : Mia Maria co-curated by : RiksaAfiaty The development of lifestyle in urban societies nowadays has changed rapidly. The development of communication technology has driven people to move faster and continuously hooked in the information being pushed in by people’s new companion > communication gadgets. Gadgets that were created to smoothen human-to -human relation have actually driven people away from each other. The demanding lifestyle has drawn people into a life of unawareness, existing, producing, but are we exactly living? Communicating but are we engaging? This kind of lifestyle have created new generation of stress, people turn to things, activities, and habits as a medium to go on living and surviving. The artists and the artworks chosen are exploring ways of living, tools of survival, habits, philosophies, and the twist and turns of being alive. For The Secret Agents, Instagram is part of the lifestyle of people today. It is a means of communication, a tool to relate to each other, and medium of living; which nowadays is updating status and showing people what you're up to. But the thing is, it is all very vague and so not concrete. People can take pictures of themselves in front of some artworks, without even knowing about the pieces or the artists. We can take pictures of ourselves in a famous jazz bar, without even 'belonging' there. It is a status of question marks. One of the most common "Medium of Living" of today is meant to get people to connect more, but instead it has only given us a perfect instrument to hide our true status. Note: FYI not one of The Secret Agents has any personal instagram account. Follow the Instagram account the_commonpeople for updates. We just wanna be like you and everyone else for this project. Yup, that's right! RuRu Shop Radio is relaunching itself as RuRu Radio, with a slew of fabulous new regular programs, and we are on board! Our previous program, "Midnight Table Talks" is now named "Midnight Talks with The Secret Agents", with basically the same concept: Interviews and chit chats with friends, about music, art, films, and other dazzling delights in popular culture; with great music from our playlist. Promo alert!! (For Bahasa Indonesia, scroll down...)
RuRu Radio presents Midnight Talks with The Secret Agents This Program, brought to you by The Secret Agents duo, is broadcasted live twice per month, on the second and the last Thursday; and corresponding with its title, it is scheduled during midnight and the next two hours. The concept behind “Midnight Talks with The Secret Agents” is actually established based on one of the duo’s bad habits, which is staying up till the wee hours of the morning from the excitement of discussing a number of things that are basically related to their favourite kinds of popular culture; namely music, art, film, etcetera. The same thing also happens quite often in an impromptu hangout sessions, with other “after midnight people” type friends, that are predominantly people in the arts and creative scene or popular culture observer and enthusiasts. Frequently, this bad-for-health habit of staying up or hanging out all night turns out to be delightfully fruitful and often times resulting in many great-unexpected things; from producing awesome music and/or art events, to the formation of wonderful communities, even a number of successful ventures! This radio program is one of the outcomes from that bad habit as well, and hopefully will also bring many useful ideas to fruition, or even the useless but still utterly delightful ones (aside from the lack of sleep)! “Midnight Talks with The Secret Agents” program consists of talks about music, art, film, and other forms of popular culture; between The Secret Agents duo as well as with guests whom are invited in correspond with the theme of each episode of the program. Listeners are also invited to chat and discuss the themes via the RuRu Radio Twitter (@RURUradio) or The Secret Agents’ one (@Desikretejents). Great music from The Secret Agents’ playlist will be played in between sessions, for the listeners’ pleasure. The Secret Agents are Indra Ameng and Keke Tumbuan, a duo working on projects involving conceptual art, good music, and other delightful things. www.the-secret -agents.weebly.com www.facebook.com/groups/desecretagents/ @Desikretejents e-mail: [email protected] *) “Midnight Talks with The Secret Agents” is the continuity of The Secret Agents’ previous radio program (for RURU Shop Radio), entitled “Midnight Table Talks”, in the year 2012. WE’RE OK, WE’RE IN JOGJA” (Projek Kos Jogja http://www.facebook.com/events/1395035420717420/ ). WE’RE OK, WE’RE IN JOGJA”. WE’RE OK, WE’RE IN JOGJA”. Amin. Sampai jumpa Jogja! ====================== To be frank, only at the last moments before D-hour (Open Studio) were we able to begin to imagine how to set up the show rooms of Ruang Mes 56, in order to 'explain' exactly what we have been doing for almost 3 weeks in Jogjakarta, and what will eventually be the result of our project for the residency program. Even the term "Open Studio" was just given birth not long before the publication of the presentation was made. We purposely did not use the word "exhibition" for the final presentation of the activities of our residency in Jogjakarta, because from the beginning we had intended to produce something that is not an exhibition, but to publish a one-edition-only magazine that will circulate by the end September. What is now taking place in Mes 56 as of August 1 is sort of an end presentation and an opportunity for us to briefly recount the working progress of the content of the magazine (entitled "WE'RE OK, WE'RE IN JOGJA"). With this magazine, we hope to show the Jogja that we know in the personal sense, to a wider public; whereby we hope to bring into 'spotlight' numerous historical spots, events, occurrences, and the names behind the scenes that have been inspiring and important (both ones that still exist and the non-existent ones) in the process of establishing the present Jogja, once again, from our personal perspectives. We displayed several examples of the magazine pages lay-out at random in one of the rooms in Mes 56 (which represents our office for working on the magazine), dozens of random photos showing our everyday activities and interesting things that we saw during the nearly 3 weeks in Jogjakarta, a collection of Irvin Domi's Instagram shots showing where we went and visit as well as who we had met for our project, there is also a city map of Jogjakarta that shows the places that we visit, plus folders containing photos of the past to show the story of how we first became acquainted with everything "Jogja" that are scattered on the table. Right outside the 'office' we put up photos and scans on the wall of various artifacts, which are of significant value to us because they relate to events or characters that played a role in the beginning of our relationship with Jogjakarta. We also displayed various forms of interactive works that invite visitors to give their response. The first is a giant map, something that we always put on at each presentations of The Secret Agents' works, this time the map of the city of Jogjakarta. Visitors can point out some places they frequently visit (places they hang out, where they work / go to school, where they go for music and art shows, as well as where they live) using colorful bookmark stickers. We also attached photographs of a number of important sites in the history of Jogja's alternative scene that have now changed, with a style that mimics the look on 'facebook' which can be commented (using notebooks that we prepared under each site photos) and that can be 'like'd or 'unlike'd (using a specially made 'thumbs up' stamp that we have prepared for each site photos). There is one space in Mes 56 that shows the 30 photos of dorm rooms (Kamar Kos) we photographed on a wall, that is a part of the sub-project of "WE'RE OK, WE'RE IN JOGJA". This project also invites the occupants of dorm rooms (Kamar Kos) in Jogja to donate photos of the interior of their dorm rooms. Read more info of this project in the post before this (http://the-secret-agents.weebly.com/4/post/2013/07/projek-kos-jogja.html) or in the link bellow... "Project Kos Jogja" http://www.facebook.com/events/1395035420717420 /. Furthermore, we made series of black and white photographs "The Secret Agents" (in which we responded to a number of locations / spots by posing ala classic secret agent themed films), using 10 of the most frequently visited touristic sites in Jogja. One of them is a location that we found by chance, which we think could be a touristic location later. The location is a small aircraft on display at Hotel Ratna. These pictures are also printed in postcard form, with the series title "WE'RE OK, WE'RE IN JOGJA". All that are shown in the Open Studio at Mes 56 are meant to show the process of making the magazine, as well as some of the content of the magazine "WE'RE OK, WE'RE IN JOGJA". All visitors response of the interactive works in the Open Studio will be turned into materials to work on and put in the magazine, including Projek Kamar Kos (The Dorm Room Project). So in addition to being an opportunity to show the development of the magazines, this Open Studio is also an important process to produce it! MUCH THANK YOU TO RUANG MES-56 AND ALL THE VISITORS OF THE OPEN STUDIO! We could not have done all this without the help of our friends in Jogja, and we hope the magazine "WE'RE OK, WE'RE IN JOGJA" could be something useful later on, in addition to something enjoyable. Amen. Berikut adalah foto-foto dari acara pembukaan ini... Next are some photos of the opening shindig.... |
